Call for Democracy Lab Proposals – Deadline January 26, 2018

October 2, 2017

Dear Colleagues,

Thanks to all of you who submitted proposals for an Immediate-Launch Democracy Lab in response to the horrific events of August 11 and 12.  We are reviewing these proposals and will announce the selected Immediate-Launch lab in a few weeks.

Today, I write to share with you our call for up to three additional Democracy Labs to be launched in August 2018.  We are asking for you to submit these proposals by January 26, 2018.

The formal call can be found here:

Call for Democracy Labs--Deadline January 26, 2018

This call augments the Immediate-Launch call in important and notable ways. In the new Democracy Lab call we  invite you to include in the proposal a plan for a tenure-track hire to bolster the activities of the lab.  In addition, we invite you to consider how to make use of the new space we are likely to have at our disposal in Rosslyn, Virginia—giving the Democracy Initiative a Washington, D.C. presence as a base for research, teaching, and public engagement.

We will hold two informational meetings to answer questions and provide additional information for faculty interested in proposing a Democracy Lab:

Monday, October 16, at 2 pm in New Cabell Hall 504 (Schoppa)
Tuesday, October 17, at 2 pm in New Cabell Hall 504 (Fiorani)

You may also wish to consult a website we created where faculty can share ideas for democracy labs and seek partners in other units, which can be found here:

We expect to provide support of up to $1 million a year for each of the labs that launch in the Fall of 2018. I hope many of you will take some time this fall to consult with possible collaborators and develop a proposal.

Sincerely,

Ian
